Path of Exile Recipes - Learn how to craft through NPC trading
Path of Exile

In Path of Exile, vendor recipes are one of those things that are hidden from the player's plain sight. The developers did not mention them for a long time, and countless attempts at finding new ones have led to the discovery of some beneficial ways of NPC trading. If you want to know how to make more money from your leveling and learn what are the best ways to upgrade your items, here we are to show you some of the best vendor recipes in the Path of Exile.

What are vendor recipes

Path of Exile doesn't offer gold or other forms of in-game currency for the players. Instead, what players can count on is the barter system. By trading with each other, adventurers can acquire goods that they were looking for. This situation looks the same when it comes to NPC trading. AI doesn't offer regular currency for items that players are selling, but they might give some items in return for received payment. By giving NPC certain sets of items, players may increase their profits and get predetermined goods - this is what vendor recipes are about.

How to use vendor recipes

As mentioned before, you want to collect specific sets of items and give them to NPC at the same time. For example, by giving AI 20% quality skills gems, you will always receive a Vaal Orb. For the combination of three skill gems of different colors and one amulet, players will get an Onyx Amulet. Getting to know what you can get by turning in certain items is crucial since selling unorganized loot is much less profitable. For a casual Exile, it may mean nothing. They go to the vendors to dump their loot and receive something more useful. However, if someone's hardcore min-maxing, they'd want the best possible outcome. It would take a lot of patience and time to test all of the available combinations of items, so some of the recipes might still be undiscovered, but here we are to tell you about the best of the ones that are already known.

Beginner vendor recipes

Chromatic Orb - Any item with three slots of different colors linked together.

It might be the most straightforward PoE vendor recipe that can increase your profits. It returns Chromatic Orbs from trades that you make. All you have to do to get it is to exchange an item with at least one red, blue and green socket linked together. It also applies to items bought from the shop so you can look for items like this at vendor stores, buy them and sell again for increased profit.

Jeweller's Orb - Any item with six sockets.

This recipe becomes useful later in the game when you unlock the ability to drop items with six sockets. When that happens, you can pick them up and trade to the NPCs to receive seven Jeweller's Orb for each item sold.

Divine Orb - Any item with six linked sockets.

With this recipe, you have to be careful since items with six linked sockets are quite often more valuable than the Orb, but if they are not, then you can trade them to NPC for an easy Divine.

Armourer's Scrap - Equipment piece with 20% quality or multiple pieces of equipment with a combined quality of 40% or more. Keep in mind that Shield in this term is also considered armor.

Blacksmith's Whetstone - Weapon with 20% quality or multiple weapons with a combined quality of 40% or more.

The most useful recipes in Path of Exile

One flask of the higher tier - Three flasks of the same type.

Flask upgrading is a crucial thing during the gameplay as it allows you to heal more effectively and restore mana at a quicker rate. You should always use the flasks of the highest tier that you can to maximize your survivability. It might be troublesome for the hardcore players, but with this recipe, it becomes easier.

Glassblower's Bauble - Any amount of flasks with a combined quality of 40% or more.

It should be done as often as possible to collect orbs for late-game flask upgrading. During your gameplay, you will find multiple flasks with upgraded quality that won't fit your needs. Collect them to your chest and sell when you have enough to get the Glassblower's Bauble.

Deleveled Gem - The selected gem with the Orb of Scouring.

Most of us have already had that situation where you buy a gem of level too high, and you cannot use it because it exceeds your stats. Selling and buying the gem might be troublesome, but by trading it to NPC with the addition of Orb of Scouring, you will get the same gem degraded by one level. If you have an unused Orb lying around your bank chest, then this might be a quicker option to get a gem that you could equip.

Gemcutter's Prism - Any amount of gems with a combined 40% quality.

This recipe is very similar to the Glassblower's Bauble one, but instead of flasks, it focuses on gems. It less likely to find those, and from time to time, quality gems might be expensive, so keep an eye on what you want to trade to an NPC and what's worth saving.

Higher-level map - Three maps of the same level and same type.

It is very useful during the endgame when the amount of maps that you have in your bank exceeds your needs. When that happens, you might combine some of the lower tier maps for the better ones. Plain and simple.

Cartographer's Chisel - Any type of hammer (ex. Stone Hammer or Rock Breaker) at level 20% quality and a map.

It might seem like a bad trade early on when you need all of the maps, but later in the game, they become much more common, and you can get rid of unused ones to get yourself some Cartographer's Chisels. They are crucial for the endgame, so make sure to don't use them on your first maps.

Vaal Orb - Seven Vaal Gems and one Vaal fragment.

Not many people know about this recipe. Usually, players stack their Vaal Gems in the bank and leave them unused for a very long time. Some also sell everything that they have to the NPCs, but there is a better way of disposing of the remaining gems. Since Vaal Orbs have decent value, it is worth saving unused Vaal Gems in the bank.

Different bandit quest reward - Twenty Orbs of Regret and an amulet of a specific type.

By trading twenty Orbs of Regret and an amulet of the specific type, you might change to a different bandit quest reward than this that you have chosen during your gameplay. It is especially useful when you have previously made a wrong choice, or you just want to switch to a different build. Keep in mind that the difficulty at which you trade your items to an NPC will affect your choices.

Most useful equipment-related PoE recipes

A weapon with +1 level to elemental skill gem recipe - One blue (Magic) Wand or Scepter + Alteration Orb + Ruby Ring, Topaz Ring or Sapphire Ring

By using this recipe, you might create either a Wand or a Scepter with +1 level to Fire, Lightning, or Cold skill gems. It allows players to craft a great elemental weapon for leveling. This recipe should be used during leveling with any elemental-based build unless it requires a specific unique.

A weapon with Spell Damage affix  - One Dagger, Scepter, Staff or Wand + one Whetstone + a chain belt.

The higher the rarity of the belt you are using with this recipe, the better result. Common belts give less spell damage than magic ones, and rare ones will improve your chance to get better spell damage rolls even further. If you are trying to roll for the highest possible Spell Damage affix, then make sure that your upgraded item has high enough item levels to receive this upgrade.

A weapon with Physical Damage affix - Any kind of weapon + Blacksmith's Whetstone + Rustic Sash.

Similarly to the previous method, if you want to craft Physical Damage affix on the weapon of your choice, trade it to NPC with Blacksmith's Whetstone and Rustic Sash. The rarity of the Sash affects your Physical Damage value, so use the rare belts for your crafting.

Orb of Chance / Chaos Orb / Regal Orb - A set of rare items with item level 1-59 / 60-74 or 75-100.

By trading a full set of rare (yellow) gear that consists of two rings, one amulet, belt, armor, gloves, boots, helmet, and either a two-handed weapon or two one-handed weapons, players may get a valuable Orbs from vendors. Depending on the lowest item level of your set types, you might get one of the following: 1 Orb of Chance for items of level 1-59, Chaos Orbs for items of 60-74 item level, Regal Orb for items of 75-100 item level. It means that it's not really worth it to mix high-level items with low-level ones. Try to mix items from the same bracket, if you crave a specific Orb. Obviously, for every set, you will only get one orb of the specific kind so if you want a total of 2 Chaos Orbs for your account trade one level 60-74 set and be back with another one after selling your last.

Buying currency items from vendors

It works in the Path of Exile to trade Orbs that you do not need to vendors to receive different Orbs - this is an Orb Recipe. Keep in mind that by doing this, you will lose more than you will gain, so do it only if you are in need of a quick Orb or two. Here is the list of what you can get for your orbs.

Act 1 (Nessa) offers:

  • Orb of Alteration for 4 Orb of Augmentation
  • Orb of Augmentation for 4 Orb of Transmutation
  • Orb of Transmutation for 7 Portal Scroll
  • Portal Scroll for 3 Scroll of Wisdom

Act 2 (Yeena) offers:

  • Orb of Regret for 2 Orb of Scouring
  • Orb of Scouring for 4 Orb of Chance
  • Orb of Fusing for 4 Jeweller's Orb
  • Chromatic Orb for 3 Jeweller's Orb
  • Jeweller's Orb for 2 Orb of Alteration

Act 3 (Clarissa) offers:

  • Orb of Alchemy for Orb of Regret
  • Orb of Chance for Orb of Fusing

On top of that, there are three additional recipes for quality items:

  • Act 1 (Tarkleigh) offers Armourer's Scrap for Blacksmith's Whetstone
  • Act 2 (Greust) offers Blacksmith's Whetstone for 3 Armourer's Scrap
  • Act 3 (Hargan) offers Glassblower's Bauble for 8 Blacksmith's Whetstone

Although most of the recipes available in the game have been already discovered there are still some unidentified. Players to this day did not figure out how to make Eternal Orbs, Lightning Gems, Vaal Skills Gems, Divination Cards for the Atlas, and another item type from the NPC trades. It's normal since possibilities are almost endless and if you want to try it by yourself you might as well be able to discover something special on your own.
